Professor Katalin Kőhalmi (1926-2012)
Aspects of Manchu Studies conference is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Professor Katalin Kőhalmi’s birth (1926-2012). ELTE Eötvös Loránd University (and its predecessors, known by various names) has offered courses related to the Manchu language and culture since the late 19th century. The early popularity of Written Manchu courses among students highlights the significance of this discipline. Key figures in the field, such as József Budenz, Gábor Bálint of Szentkatolna, and Katalin Kőhalmi (also known as Katalin Uray Kőhalmi), have dedicated substantial studies to various aspects of Manchu and Tungus philology. The last decades of the 20th century and the early years of the 21st century were marked by a close association between Manchu studies at ELTE Eötvös Loránd University and the contributions of Professor Katalin Kőhalmi. The Department of Mongolian and Inner Asian Studies (ELTE), along with the Department of Mongolian Language and Linguistics, Department of Literature and Arts (National University of Mongolia), the Mongolian Association for Manchu Studies and other partner institutions, organises an international conference on Manchu, Mongolian and Siberian philology, historical and cultural sources, and their contextual significance, to celebrate the legacy of one of the field’s foremost scholars, Katalin Kőhalmi.
